The Fostex PM0.4 near field monitors complete the array of the company’s well regarded PM series that ranges from four-inch to eight-inch woofers. This product is ideal for desk-tops but its audio performance and its compact size has elevated its applications into professional console studio monitoring, portable monitoring and audio installation.
The PM0.4 boasts of an exclusively designed woofer and soft dome tweeter. It comes with an efficient 18-watt bi-amp drive for both high and low fidelity. Independent amplifiers are mounted to its left and right speakers and a black front baffle that is glossy and elegant –looking. The unit is magnetically shielded to enable proximate setting to a video monitor.
The sound produced by the units are crisp and clear with a thumping bass, which is just a tad too thumpy that it can reveal the less than perfect sound in the mixer. The clarity and detail of the sound produced is comparable to more expensive studio speakers. The higher frequencies were slightly over-pronounced. The combination of a bright treble and a rather thumpy bass may cause musicians to make mistakes as they compensate during mixing.
The unit can produce powerful sound despite its four inch driver. For the quality of the sound these monitors produce, it is reasonably priced and quite ideal for the budget-conscious. The PM0.4 is also perfect for home recording and for small rooms. The plain design and glossy finish may seem tacky for some but the speaker cones look pricey. The tweeter is recessed to protect from accidental knocking down and the power switches for each speaker is at the lower back portion.
